Sing-ely helps singers and teachers when you have a sheet music score, and you want to quickly and easily sound out the notes. It lets you pick key signature, staff, and whether you want it to transpose the sounds. So, for instance, you tell it 2 Sharps, (key of D or Bm), and Bass clef.

Then it constructs the biggest possible staff based on the size of your screen, and you just point at the notes with your finger. It sounds the corresponding piano note.

Sing-ely supports accidental flat/sharp/natural notes. Pressing anywhere in the staff area produces the normal note. Pressing off to the left of the staff plays the flat note. Pressing off to the right plays the sharp note.

Sometimes you may encounter sheet music written in one key, but maybe that's too high, and your singers need to sing it lower. Shape Note Hymn are often written in keys that are difficult for modern singers, so they get transposed down. You can tell it to transpose up or down by half steps, and it will play the transposed note.

Sing-ely works well on older devices, phones or tablets, all the way back to Android 4.0.1.

It contains no ads, and requires no special permissions. The only difference between the Lite (free) version and the Pro (cheap) version is the Lite version doesn't do all the really bizarre keys, and doesn't have all the transpose choices. Otherwise the apps are identical.

This is my first Java application, and my first Android application, and so the UI is a bit rough. It works well enough to be useful for musicians and singers, which was my goal. Anyone who really knows Android UI coding, particularly bitmaps & canvas and has ideas on improving is welcome to contact me.

Caveats and Notes:

1) Sing-ely contains piano notes corresponding to notes humans can actually sing. This means C2 (two octaves below middle C) to C6 (two octaves above middle C) If you ask it to transpose the bass clef low enough down, or the treble clef enough up, we won't have the corresponding note to sound. But, you probably couldn't sing it anway.

2) Vertical screen position - on some devices, the vertical position Android reports to me on a keypress is off from the vertical position where I drew the line. There is some translation, and I never figured it out consistently. If the balloon is showing up in the wrong place, do this: Press up in the farthest top left of the white area; It should see that and then tell you to next press the bottom next. We will take that next key-press, and calculate a fudge-factor to apply to the position, and it should now recognize the notes in the right place. This factor will be stored for the next time you run it, so it only has to be done once.

3) Balloon duration - the balloon which shows which note is pressed is a standard Android "Toast()" call, and the shortest duration is 2.5 seconds. Press enough notes and you can get way ahead of the balloon.

4) Startup time - most of the startup time is chewed up cramming 60 piano note recordings into the Android soundPool for later use. It may still be digesting that by the time you pick a staff and are poking out notes. So, it may not sound notes initially. Note that if you put it in the background, or flip the screen display, it is smart enough to not re-do that sound initialization a 2nd time.
